Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
