TikTok is introducing a new feature that enables them to reduce the volume of AI-created videos appearing in their streams. This move comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 bn content made with AI.
Testing and Rollout
This change is being tested over the following weeks before a global launch. This advancement aligns with a surge in AI-generated material, spurred by recent AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
Recent reports that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding channels on another major platform exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or dreamlike.
Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the option to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” stated a platform representative.
AI on the Platform
The platform shared that there are currently over a billion videos on its network identified as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 million videos are added to the service daily, making clips made by AI a relatively small percentage of its total content library.
How to Adjust Settings
Users will be capable of decrease or raise the amount of AI-generated videos they watch by opening the topic control feature in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be modified under the setting cover politics, style, cosmetics, and dance.
Platform Guidelines
The platform’s guidelines oblige users to label convincing AI-made content, and it bans dangerous fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is unmarked can be deleted under its community policies.
Furthermore, the app will from now on add an artificially created tag to content produced via its built-in AI features, or detected by an collaborative effort for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is designed to deter users from attempting to evade the labeling process.
Educational Initiatives
The platform is furthermore launching a $2m AI literacy fund for professionals and groups to create learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit educational bodies focused on teaching programming and robotics.
Platform Protection
TikTok has supported its content review process, following controversy over intentions to make redundant hundreds of review team members in the UK. TikTok is set to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in London, with trade unions and online safety experts expressing worry that staff are being displaced by automated systems.
A trust and safety lead explained that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by removing the most graphic content ahead of it has to be seen by humans. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content seen by safety staff over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
