The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
