Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
